150 personal and professional stories about intimacy and sexuality with a physical disability

Arnhem, September 4, 2025 – On the International Day of Sexual Health, the book “We Do It Too!” by  the authors Veroni Steentjes (50) and Emile Cobben (50) will be released. In her 37-year medical history, Veroni was never asked about intimacy and sexuality—something she greatly missed. People with disabilities also have needs. The longing for touch is universal. Social taboos and shame cause major physical and mental health problems. That is why this book is their mission: to make the subject discussable—so that a client’s vibrator at home no longer leads to uncomfortable reactions from healthcare professionals.

The book features 150 stories from people with disabilities, (ex-)partners, sexologists, sexual care providers, and healthcare professionals about intimacy and sexuality with a physical disability. Goedele Liekens wrote the foreword.

Veroni Steentjes: “I am a sexual being, not a robot. Even with a chronic illness I need intimacy and sexuality, but because of my limited hand function I cannot operate a vibrator.”

More than one million people in the Netherlands live with a physical disability. Many people think that people with disabilities cannot or do not want to have sex. To help change this, Veroni and her able-bodied partner Emile Cobben (50) have compiled this book over the past few years.

“Because of my condition, I have very limited hand function, so I cannot use a vibrator myself. Luckily, I can still have sex with my able-bodied partner, because I also have that need. My difficult body—with its usual unpleasant feelings and limitations—also longs for pleasant sensations. It takes a bit more creativity, patience, and humor, but sex with a disability is far from a deficiency!” – Steentjes.

About the book

Intimacy and sexuality with a disability are taboo subjects, influenced by many factors such as education, culture, society, religion, and upbringing. “We Do It Too!” shows that “it” is possible with a disability. The taboo exists not only among people with disabilities themselves, but also among healthcare professionals. Through relatable stories and practical tips, the book aims to reduce the taboo and contribute to better care, treatment, and conversations.
